JustFoodForDogs has announced a recall of its entire production of 3 of the company’s dog food meal products:
- Beef & Russet Potato
- Fish & Sweet Potato
The recall covers all sizes.
In its press release, JustFoodForDogs blamed the recall on “restaurant grade” green beans that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria.
The health risk here is two-fold. The first is to the animals that will actually consume the food. Listeriosis is rare in dogs, say veterinarians, and usually causes only “mild” problems like vomiting and diarrhea. In rare cases, however, it can kill dogs.
There is also a risk to pet owners and other family members, who can become infected through contact with tainted pet foods, feces or other contaminated objects.
JustFoodForDogs advises any pet owner whose dogs are displaying signs or symptoms of listeriosis to contact a vet immediately. Some things to look out for include:
- Muscular issues
- Respiratory distress
The recalled JustFoodForDogs foods were sold only in California and offered in 7, 14, 18 and 72 ounce packages.
The company says that it has received no reports of any people becoming ill after feeding the meals to pets but some pets have been observed with short-term bouts of diarrhea and vomiting that could be related.
The green beans at the center of this recall, however, have definitively tested positive for the bacteria. JustFoodForDogs says that for the time being, future production runs will be made without the green bean component.
If you have any of the recalled dog food you should, says the company, take it back to your place of purchase for a refund or credit. And for more information you can speak to a customer rep directly at 866-726-9509.
