Food safety officials with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development say that samples of Ackawi cheese produced at Green Cedar Dairy have tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes contamination. Green Cedar Dairy announced a recall last week.
The cheese is packaged in clear shrink-wrapped plastic. Each packet should have a sticker with a sell-by date. Covered in this recall are all dates from March 26, 2019 or later.
In its press release about the recall, the dairy explained that the Listeria contamination was discovered during a routine inspection earlier in the month. There have been, says the company, no reports of anyone actually suffering food poisoning from the cheese.
The cheese was sold in stores in East Dearborn and Dearborn Heights Michigan. If you believe you have any on hand you should throw it out or take it back to your place of purchase. And if you need more information, you can speak directly to a dairy representative by calling (313) 584-4499.
