Health officials with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC, announced yesterday that its investigators are working with health officials in 19 states to track down people who may have been exposed to Brucella after consuming raw cows’ milk from Miller’s Biodiversity Farm in Quarryville, Pennsylvania.
In January the CDC issued a formal Health Advisory tentatively implicating the farm after a New York resident was diagnosed back in November.
No one knows exactly how many people might have been exposed to the pathogen but say they know of exposures in these states:
- New Jersey
- New York
- North Carolina
- Rhode Island
- South Carolina
The particular strain of Brucella, RB51, that was found in this case can be tough to diagnose and is resistant to first-line drugs like rifampin and penicillin. No information has been released on the victim in this case. (Media reports of a second New York victim appear to be muddling the details of this case with those of a similar case from 2017.)
If You Used Miller’s Raw Milk In The Past 3 Years
The CDC recommends that if you consumed any raw milk or raw dairy product from Miller’s Biodiversity Farm since January 2016–yes, 2016–you should talk to your doctor. And, of course, you should immediately throw out any unused raw milk or raw dairy.
Miller’s Biodiversity Farm is a members-only food club offering what it calls “bespoke fresh dairy products” and other “junk-free” foods. The dairy has not, as far as I can tell, offered any public comment about the CDC’s advisory.
This case is the third known case of a RB51 brucellosis infection in the U.S. to be blamed on raw dairy in less than two years.
